VVM's origin and growth in credit controlVVM was incorporated in 1990 and started operating with just six people. From the outset it sought to differentiate itself from other firms of attorneys by realizing that it was not just "part of the profession" but that it was a small player in a very competitive market. A market in which not only other firms of attorneys were fighting for their share of work, but also companies outside of "the profession"were making major inroads into what had previously been the exclusive territories of attorneys. VVM realized that the only way to win in these circumstances was to re-evaluate the role of attorneys and to re-orientate and re-invent itself in a new approach to winning business in the tough markets of the 1990s.
The first and most significant change of thinking was to view the company less as a firm of attorneys and more as a business entity. To work along purely business lines meant that no longer could one simply rely on being in the legal profession and be given work to execute as a result of one's professional status. It meant that finding out what the market really needed and how to satisfy those needs more effectively, much faster and at a more competitive cost than all other "suppliers" (be they attorneys or otherwise) was the only way to win and grow.
From this position, VVM in its application of the recovery of credit, grew spectacularly in a few short years until it exceeded 200 people and was handling volumes of work which would previously, without its Information Technology and Workflow Systems, have needed over 800 people.
As the company grew, various non-legal departments such as Information Technology, Financial and Call Centre Departments were formed providing the competitive advantage required to attend to successful credit control. These non-legal departments began to attain their own individual identities and focus, and were able to stand up and compete in their own right.
