Pamplemousse Garden
This garden is known to naturalists throughout the world for its large collection of indigenous and exotic plants.
The garden boasts 500 different species of plants. Of particular interest are the giant water-lilies (Victoria Regia), a spice garden and the Talipot Palms, said the flower once every 60 years after which they die.
Grand Bassin
This natural lake resting in the crater of an extinct volcano is a place of pilgrimage for all Hindus, especially on the occasion of Maha Shivaratree. This religious festival is celebrated in honour of the God Shiva, in February.
After a fast, Hindu devotees, dressed in spotless white, carry the Kanwar – made with bamboo richly decorated with paper and flowers – in a procession to Grand Bassin to bring back holy water.
Casela Bird Park
A tropical paradise set amid abundantly beautiful gardens. It is situated in the Rivière Noire District. This bird park stretches over 25 hectares and contains more 140 varieties amounting to 2,500 birds. Specimen from the five continents may be seen there. You will find other attractions such as tigers, fish ponds, tortoises, monkeys, orchids (seasonal).
